D.W.’s Kountry Cookers Take Team of the Year

2011-2012 Team of the Year – D.W.’s Kountry Cookers

D.W.’s Kountry Cookers were honored as the GBA 2011-2012 Team of the Year this weekend at the ComSouth Hambone Jam in Fort Valley, GA.  The team was honored with the Team of the Year banner and a check from Team of the Year sponsor Stump’s Smokers.

The Team of the Year race came right down to the wire.  With just 2 contests remaining,  D.W.’s was tied with Jack’s New South for first place.  At Fernandina Beach, D.W.’s took 2nd in both ribs & pork along with the reserve grand award to open up a 17 point lead.  At the final contest of the year in Plains, Jack’s New South rallied with a first in ribs, second in loin and the grand championship for a total of 30 points.  D.W.’s first place in loin and 4th place in pork was good for 22 points and secured the title.

Jack’s New South was the runner up with Sunset Smokers, Holy Smokers and Sauced Hogs Smokeshack rounding out the Top 5 teams for the year.  Finishing 6th thru 10th in the overall standings were Smokin the Good Stuff, Bubba Grills, Holy Smokes, SmokinWilly Squealers and Bethel Smokers.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!   August 22, 2012 —  We have just discovered that the application form posted for the Southern Slow Ride contest in Griffin had the wrong mailing address.  I you have sent a cook team or judge application by regular mail, you should check with the organizer, Wade Hutcheson, to verify whether or not he has received your forms. You can email Wade at hutch@uga.edu .  The forms with the correct Post Office box address is now on the website. 

Southern Slow Ride BBQ Contest Sept 21-22

The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) will be sanctioning the Southern Slow Ride BBQ Contest at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds in Griffin on September 21-22, 2012.  This is the first year the GBA has sanctioned the contest sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Griffin.

Over $5,000 in cash & prizes will be awarded to the contestants, including $1500 to the Grand Champion.  There will be a People’s Choice contest where visitors can purchase $5 tickets to sample championship BBQ from up to 10 teams.  There will ancillary contests on Friday evening in Poultry, Stew, Dessert & Sauce.

Also on Friday evening, Them Morris Boys featuring Mitch Morris will be concert. The highlight of Saturday’s activities will be the Southern Slow Ride car show.

GBA Nominations

Nominations for GBA Officers for the 2012-2013 year closed July 31, 2012. The following nominations were confirmed:

Since none of the offices are contested, the above slate will be your officers for the 2012-2013 year. Thank you Harry, Jimmy & Pam for a great 2011-2012 and congratulations on being selected again for 2012-2013.

Sumner Egg Festival BBQ Blast – Sept 14-15, 2012

 

Sumner  Egg Festival BBQ Blast – Sept 14-15, 2012 — The Sumner Egg Festival will once again host the GBA sanctioned BBQ Blast.  Last year’s inaugural BBQ contest was one of the highlights of the GBA contest season.

D.W.’s Kountry Cookers captured the Grand Championship in the 2011 BBQ Blast.

In addition to the BBQ Blast, the Sumner Egg Festival offers fun and activities for the entire family. The festivities get underway with the Egg Festival Parade. Classic cars will be on display along with food vendors, arts & crafts and games for kids as well as adults. Local entertainers will be performing live throughout the day.
