The “Black Train” made the long trip from Tifton to Acworth worthwhile by dominating the field at Smoke on the Lake at Cauble Park on Lake Acworth.  The team turned the GBA “hat trick” by making finals in all three categories.  They capped off the strong run in the preliminary rounds with a perfect 600 score in Ribs.  It was, however, their Pork Loin entry that had the highest score in the finals rounds for the Grand Championship win.

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack, who is trying to hold off the hard charging Smokin’ 42 BBQ team in the GBA Team of the Year standings, also had a successful weekend by making finals in Pork Loin & Pulled Pork and took home the Reserve Championship. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack holds a slim 21 point lead in the Team of the Year standings with only one contest remaining in the 2013-2014 season.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ’s final round score of 599.1 topped the Pork Loin category. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack took the 2nd spot Trey Barnes of Butt Rubbin’ BBQ finished third. Bubba Grills took 4th place with 92 BBQ in 5th. Sixth thru 10th places went to Wild Smoke, Just Smoke N Around, Smoke Ring Aficionados, Plum Superior BBQ and Natural Born Smokers.

The win in Pulled Pork went to Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack with Bubba Grills taking 2nd place. Smokin 42 BBQ grabbed third place and Plum Superior BBQ grabbed 4th place. 92 BBQ edged out Butt Rubbin BBQ for 5th place by 0.3 of a point. Smokin’ J’s finished in 7th with Smokin’ HOTlanta in 8th place. Rounding out the top 10 was Just Smoke N Around BBQ and Smoke Ring Aficionados.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ followed up the prefect score in the Ribs preliminary round with the top score in the Ribs finals round. 92 BBQ was the runner up. Third place went to Plum Superior BBQ and 4th place went to Smokin’ J’s. Natural Born Smokers completed the top 5. Sixth place went to Bubba Grills with Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack just 0.6 of a point back in 7th place.  Just Smoke N Around, Smokin’ HOTlanta & Butt Rubbin; BBQ finished 8th thru 10th place respectively

The North Cobb Rotary Club also sponsored a GBA Cooking for Fun Division that drew 21 teams.  Swineholio won the Grand Champion award and East Coast BBQ was named the Reserve Champion.

Swineholio won the Chicken competition with How Bout Them Hawks in second place. Holy Smokers NS took 3rd place with Smokin’ Z BBQ in 4th and Smokin’ Snowballs in 5th place.  Smokin’ Z BBQ finished on top in Pulled Pork. Swineholio was the runner up. Third thru 5th places went to East Coast BBQ, Big Blue BBQ and Nice Rack BBQ. The winner in the Ribs category was Smokin’ Jackets. CJ BBQ grabbed 2nd place and Swineholio grabbed third. East Coast BBQ and Grills Gone Wild completed the top five. 

The North Cobb Rotary Club did an outstanding job in spite of rain off and on throughout the weekend. Even with the rain washing out the Firday nite concert and fireworks, the Acworth community still turned out to support the event & the People’s Choice contests generated over $5,000 for charity.

The Georgia Barbecue Association will wind up the 2013-2014 competition season in Dallas, GA with the Paulding Co. Stars & Stripes BBQ Cook Off & Festival on June 20-21.

Bethel Smokers Rises to the Top at 3 Rivers BBQ Fest

Bethel Smokers of Douglas, GA, won the Pulled Pork Category and with the top score of the finals rounds captured the Grand Championship at the 3 Rivers BBQ Fest.  The contest was held at the Towns Bluff Park & Heritage Center just north of Hazlehurst on the banks of the mighty Altamaha River.

It was a close race for the Reserve Championship.  Bubba Grills total of 1765.5 in the three preliminary rounds was just 0.2 of a point ahead of Smokin’ 42 BBQ.

 

Bethel Smokers score of 597.7 topped the Pulled Pork category. Mojo Smokehouse of Willacoochee, GA took second place.  In third place, cooking in their first GBA contest, was Straw Boss BBQ. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack finished in fourth place with Just Smoke N Around in fifth place. Sixth place went to Smokin’ 42 BBQ and 7th place went to Drive By Smokers. H & J Cook Team, Bubba Grills and 92 BBQ finished 8th, 9th & 10th respectively.

 

 

 

 

Bubba Grills won the Ribs category with Smokin’ 42 BBQ as runner-up. TC’s BBQ of Swainsboro, captured third and 92 BBQ captured fourth place. Rounding out the top 5 was Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack. Sixth place was taken by Mojo Smokehouse. Seventh thru 10th places went to Smokin’ AJ’s, Bethel Smokers, Just Smoke N Around and Doc & Dicies.

 

92 BBQ, Brad Sweet with special assistant pitmaster William, conquered the Pork Loin category.  Bubba Grills took second place.  Mojo Smokehouse grabbed the third spot. Sauced Hogs Smokeshack had their second 4th place finish and Just Smoke N Around got their second 5th place award. Smokin’ AJ’s took 6th place and Doc & Dicies took 7th place. Eighth went to Smokin’ 42 BBQ and 9th place went to Straw Boss BBQ. Bethel Smokers completed the top 10 in the category.

It was  cold and wet weekend in Jackson & Butts County, GA, but even the weather could not douse the hot streak that Smokin’ 42 BBQ has been on. The team in black from Tifton, GA, captured their 4th Grand Championship of the 2013-204 GBA season. Once again, it was Pork Loin that gave Pitmaster Chad Brooks and teammates Chris O’Neal and Justin Marchant the last call of the day.

The rain was almost constant during the day Friday and continued throughout the night and most of the day Saturday.  Temperatures dropped into the bone chilling range, but the tough conditions for the weekend didn’t dampen the spirits of the contestants. The cook teams took it all in stride and produced some outstanding BBQ for the judges.

Scott Fletcher of Fletcher’s Finest, made finals in Ribs to go along with a 4th place finish in  Pullled Pork and a 5th place finish in Loin to take the Reserve Grand Champion award.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ championship winning box topped the Pork Loin field. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack was the runner-up.  Cooking in their first GBA contest, Daniel Waters of Where There’s Smoke made finals & finished third. 92 BBQ came in 4th with Fletcher’s Finest taking 5th place. Another first time GBA competitor, Squeal Team Six/K&K Grills took 6th place. Seventh place went to a hometown team, Just Smoke N Around. Butt Rubbin’ BBQ claimed 8th place with BCD: Boys Cooking Dangerously and Dixie Que rounding out the top 10.

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack continued their strong run through the GBA contest season by winning the Pulled Pork category.  Brad Sweet and 92 BBQ took 2nd place with Rub Shakers Que taking third.  Fourth place went to Fletcher’s Finest and 5th place went to Dixie Que.  Bubba Grills got the call for 6th place with BCD: Boys Cooking Dangerously getting the 7th place call. Butt Rubbin’ BBQ, Squeal Team Six/K&K Grills and Smokin’ 42 BBQ finished 8th, 9th & 10th respectively.

 

Fletcher’s Finest turned in the best Rib box of the day. Bill Goddard & Rub Shakers Que made finals twice & took 2nd place. TC’s BBQ captured 3rd place. Dixie Que & Where There’s Smoke tied for 4th with Dixie Que winning the spot on the 4th tiebreaker.  Another local team, Rufus Smokehouse came in 6th place.  Seventh thru 10th place went to BubbaGrills, Smokin’ 42 BBQ, 92 BBQ and Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack.

 

The GBA extends gratitude to Connie & Wayne Rosser and the Jackson Exchange Club for a job very well done in the face of very trying conditions.  The next stop on the GBA contest trail is the 3 Rivers BBQ Fest at Towns Bluff Park & Heritage Center in Hazlehurst on May 2-3.  The following week the GBA heads north to Acworth for Smoke on the Lake.  An new contest has just been added to the GBA Calendar. The Paulding Co. Stars & Stripes BBQ Cook-off will be held in Dallas on June 20-21.

logoredThe Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) will hold its first ever Team of the Year Banquet on August 16, 2014 at the Canongate-Healy Point Country Club in Macon. The event will begin at 6:00 pm with an Icebreaker Reception.  The banquet will be served at 7:00 pm with the Team of the Year awards ceremonies to follow. Following the meal and awards, a DJ will play music for dancing until 11:00 pm.

All GBA members, cooks, judges and contest organizers, are invited to attend.  There will be drawings for door prizes including two Jr Stumpster smokers.

The GBA will recognize the Top 20 teams in the Team of the Years points standings. Teams 11 thru 20 will receive a T0p 20 Team of the Year banner.  Teams 2 thru 10 will recieve a cash award and a Top 10 Team of the Year banner. The Team of the Year will receive a cash award, a large 2013-2014 Team of the Year banner and a Stumps XL Baby Smoker.

Details for host hotel(s) near the banquet site are being finalized.
