Two in a Row for 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers

Brad Sweet has partnered up with Jeff Conley of Assassin Smokers and it looks like an unbeatable combination at the start of the Georgia Barbecue Association’s 2014-2015 season. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers made the finals in all three categories for the second straight contest at the Grande Creek Pig Jam.  The contest is held at a great venue —  the Georgia Sports Arena in Swainsboro, GA. The team’s Loin entry in the finals was the top scoring box in the round to win a second straight Grand Championship.

Gary & Dionne Lanton of Holy Smokes returned to competition BBQ after a year layoff and the Dublin based team picked up right where they left off.  Holy Smokes scored a perfect 600 in the preliminary round of Ribs.  The also turned in the top entry in the finals Ribs round along with a 3rd place finish in Pulled Pork and 6th place finish in Loin to capture the Reserve Championship.

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers lead the way in Pork Loin with Smokin Butts Pit Crew in second place. Bubba Grills finished third. Lawdawg BBQ took fourth place with Bones Grill Shack in fifth Sixth place went to Holy Smokes and seventh place went to Real South BBQ  In eighth place was Bethel Smokers. Ninth place went to Old Henry BBQ and Smokin Squealers took tenth place.

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers also won the Pulled Pork category. Bethel Smokers was the runner up with Holy Smokes in third place. Smokin Butts Pit Crew grabbed the fourth spot and Southern Hoggs took fifth place. Sixth place went to Lawdawg BBQ and seventh place went to Bubba Grills.  Rounding out the top ten were Smokin’ J’s, Real South BBQ and Smokin’ Squealers.

Holy Smokes followed up the perfect 600 score in the Ribs preliminary round with a 597 score in the final round to win the category. Bubba Grills was second with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers in third place. Smokin Squealers took fourth place and Smokin Butts Pit Crew finished up their strong for the contest with a 5th place finish in Ribs. Old Henry BBQ walked with the 6th place call followed by Lawdawg BBQ in seventh.  Bethel Smokers, Real South BBQ & Bones Grill Shack finished eighth, ninth & tenth respectively.

 

 

The GBA thanks Jeremy Faircloth and all the staff at the Georgia Sports Arena for a great job at one of the Associations favorite locations.  The next stop on the GBA trail will be the Doc Holiday BBQ Championship in Griffin, GA on Sept 26-27.  Full results below:

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers Wins GBA State Championship

Brad Sweet, Pitmaster of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers,really brought his A game to Fort Valley for the ComSouth Hambone Jam and the Georgia Barbecue State Championship.  Brad made finals in all three categories and claimed wins in both Loin and Pulled Pork.  The dominating performance earned 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers their first Grand Championship and the title of GBA State Champion for 2014-2015.

DSCF3032Lawdawg BBQ, Kerry & Kevin Sparks,  made finals in Loin and Pulled Pork then tied for 3rd place in Ribs. They missed a triple finals on the 5th tiebreaker to finish in fourth place in the category. The strong performance over the three categories carried the Brunswick team to the Reserve Championship

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers turned in the state championship Pork Loin. Lawdawg BBQ took second place with The BBQ Ninja, Pitmaster Rodney Ellington, claimed third place. Cooking with Stump took 4th place and Anarque took 5th place.  Smokin’ 42 BBQ and Hard Rock Hill BBQ tied for 6th place with Smokin’42 taking the spot on the 5th tiebreaker. Smokin’ AJs took 8th place.  Bubba Grills claimed 9th and Dixie Davis Cookers completed the top 10.

In Pulled Pork it was 92 BBQ/Assassin Smoker again for the win with Bubba Grills as runner-up.  Lawdawg BBQ finished in 3rd place. H&J Cook Team with special guest Pitmistress Lois Sebastian, edged out Cooking with Stump for 4th place on a tiebreaker.  Arnarque claimed 6th with The BBQ Ninja in 7th.  Real South BBQ, Rub My Butt BBQ and Hard Rock Hill BBQ finished 8th thru 10th respectively.

Bubba Grills broke up 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers run with the best Rib box of the day. Buster Davis of Smokin’ AJs grabbed second place with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers taking the 3rd spot.  Lawdawg BBQ came in 4th place. The BBQ Ninja got their third call of the day with a 5th place finish. Smokin’ 42 BBQ grabbed 6th.  Rounding out the top 10 were Anarque, Smokin’ Js, Swine Time Grilling Team and Butt Rubbin’ BBQ.

The Georgia Barbecue Association thanks ComSouth and the Fort Valley Downtown Development Authority for hosting another great state championship event.  The next stop on the GBA trail will be the Grande Creek Pig Jam in Swainsboro on Sept 19-20.

Grand Champion – Bubba Grills

The battle for Grand Champion at the first Paulding Co. Stars & Stripes BBQ Contest in Dallas, GA was just as heated as the summer afternoon, Bubba Grills’ Rib entry and Smokin’ 42 BBQ’s Loin entry both scored 596.2 points in the finals round. This forced the Grand Championship to be decided on a tiebreaker. It didn’t take long, however, as Bubba Grills won the first level tiebeaker to claim the Grand Championship.

Competing in their first GBA contest, Robin Bowles and the Just Blowing Smoke team made finals in Loin and Pulled Pork along with a fifth place finish in Ribs to take the Reserve Championship Award.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ continued to rule the Pork Loin category by winning the category for the 6th time this season. Just Blowing Smoke took second place with Bubba Grills taking third. Brad Sweet of 92 BBQ finished in 4th place and another first time GBA competitor, Reading BBQ finished in fifth place. Sixth place went to The Fat Redneck BBQ Co. Seventh place went to Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack. Eighth place went to Smokin’ J’s. Ninth place went to Swine Time Grilling Team. Rounding out the top 10 was the only lady pitmaster in the contest, Crystal Smitherman of Hard Rock Hill BBQ.

Harvey Willis of Fiddler’s BBQ had the top Pulled Pork entry of the contest. Just Blowing Smoke was just 0.6 of a point behind for their second runner-up finish. TC’s BBQ came in third place. Smokin’ 42 BBQ claimed 4th place with H & J BBQ taking fifth. Sixth place went to Swine and Shine BBQ. The Fat Redneck BBQ Co. & Swine Time Grilling Team finished 7th and 8th place respectively. Moe Cason of Poderosa BBQ and TV’s BBQ Pitmasters fame, took 9th place. Bubba Grills got the 10th place call.

Bubba Grills’ Grand Champiionship winning Ribs were tops in the category. Ponderosa BBQ came in second place. Smokin Squealers, another team cooking their first GBA contest, came in third place.  92 BBQ grabbed 4th place with Just Blowing Smoke in fifth place. Four Fathers BBQ edged out Just Smoke N Around BBQ for 6th place by just 0.1 of a point. Eighth thru tenth places went to TC’s BBQ, Fiddler’s BBQ and Butt Rubbin’ BBQ.

The contest also held a GBA Cooking For Fun division competition.  Larry Cavendar of Screaming Eagle BBQ won the Pulled Pork Category. The Fat Guys took second place with We Want Q in third.  The Fat Guys, pitmaster Robert Holt, had the top Ribs entry of the division.  Sreaming Eagle BBQ was the runner-up with Pig Buster BBQ in third place.

This completes the 2013-2014 contest year for the Georgia Barbecue Association. The new contest year with begin with the GBA State Championships at the Hambone Jam in Fort Valley on September 5-6.  The GBA will hold the first ever Team of the Year banquet on August 16 in Macon.  More details of the banquet will be posted soon on the GBA website: www.bbqg.com
