Dilly Dally in Dooly 2020

The start of the busy GBA spring season got underway at the Dilly Dally in Dooly on February 22, 2020.  Thirty-four professional BBQ teams and about seventy judges braved the cold on the grounds of the Big Pig Jig to find the best BBQ teams of the day.

For the second year in row, Off the Chain claimed the Grand Championship and took home $2,000 and a trophy for their Loin entry.  Lang BBQ Smokers earned the reserve championship, $1,500, and a trophy after finishing 3rd in Loin, 10th in Pork, and 3rd in Ribs.

All three finalist in Loin received 600s in the preliminary round, but after the finals round, Off the Chain prevailed to win the Loin category.  Smokin the Good Stuff finished second, and Lang BBQ Smokers took third place. 

Hootie Q won the Pulled Pork category.  Smoke’N Cowboys got a 600 in the preliminary round and finished in second place.  Johnson Boys BBQ was third. 

Big Daddy’s Meat House claimed the top spot in Ribs, followed by Off the Chain and Lang BBQ Smokers.  Off the Chain also got their second 600 of the day during the ribs preliminaries.

Americus 2019

Twenty-three professional BBQ teams met at the KOA campground outside Americus, Georgia on December 14, 2019 at the second annual Brickyard Bash and compete for $10,000 in prize money.  Teams, judges, and officials were treated to a hamburger and baked potato bar on Friday night, pancake and sausage breakfast on Saturday morning, and a pizza and wing dinner on Saturday night.

Lang BBQ Smokers claimed their second Grand Championship of the season to win $1,500 and a trophy for their Loin entry.  In only their first GBA season,

Meat with Feet also won $1,500 as Reserve Grand Champion after finishing 2nd in Loin, 3rd in Pork, and 8th in Ribs.

Lang BBQ Smokers took first place in Loin, followed by Meat with Feet.  Bite My Butt BBQ finished in third place despite getting a 600 score in the preliminary round.

Lang BBQ Smokers was also the top team in Pulled Pork, while Budmeisters finished in second place.  Meat with Feet was third, but also got the only other 600 of the day in the preliminary round.

Bite My Butt BBQ returned to claim the top spot in Ribs.  Budmeisters got their second runner up finish of the day and Rescue Smokers finished in third place.

The GBA will take a break for the holidays before returning with a very busy spring season beginning with the Dilly Dally in Dooly on February 22.  In the meantime, the next GBA judging class will be held in Barnesville on January 25, 2020.  Check out these and all of our other events at the Georgia Barbecue Association website.

Moultrie Moose Lodge 1158 BBQ Cook Off 2019

The 7th annual BBQ Cook Off to benefit Moose Lodge was held in Moultrie, Georgia on December 7, 2019.   Hot Ash Q took home the title of Grand Championship, a trophy, and $2,000 in prize money for their loin entry.

Johnson Boys BBQ was named Reserve Grand Champion and won $1,000 and a trophy for finishing 6th in Loin, 3rd in Pork, and 4th in Ribs.

Hot Ash Q also won the Loin category, followed by Off the Chain and Peach Coast BBQ.

Smoke Show took first place in both the Pulled Pork and Rib categories.  Hogs Unlimited finished second and Johnson Boys BBQ came in third in pulled pork.  In Ribs, Hot Ash Q was second and Flyin’ Pig Bar-b-que was third.

Smokin on Lake Blackshear 2019

The first ever Smokin’ on Lake Blackshear BBQ & Music Festival was held at Lake Blackshear Resort & Georgia Veterans State Park in Cordele, Georgia on November 16, 2019.   Thirty-five professional teams and another fifteen Cooking for Fun teams gathered to fight for their share of $10,000 in prize money, trophies, and bragging rights.

After two Reserve Championships in the first three contests of this season, Lang BBQ Smokers claimed the Grand Championship and a $2,000 check this week for their pork entry.

 

Flyin Pig Bar-B-Que returned to action and also won $2,000 and the Reserve Grand Championship with 3rd in Loin, 14th in pork, and 4th in loin.

Smoke Show finished first in the Pro Loin category. Hootie Q was second, and Flyin Pig Bar-B-Que took third loin.

Lang BBQ Smokers finished first in the Pro Pork category and also earned the only 600 score of the day during the preliminary round.  Johnson Boys BBQ took second place, and Hogs Unlimited made their first finals with a third place Pork.

Smoke’N Cowboys won Pro Ribs, with Southern Hogs/Dexter Meat Co. taking second, and We Want Que in third.

In the Cooking for Fun division, Wine & Swine won the chicken category.  Rack-N-Butts finished second and Pig-eee-licious came in third.

Pig-eee-licious won the CFF Pork category, followed by Wine & Swine and Cops N Robbers BBQ.

CFF Ribs was won by Shocks My Brain BBQWhitewater Smokers finished second and Rack-N-Butts was third.

Rack-N-Butts was named “Best of Lake Blackshear” after taking a 2nd Chicken, 3rd Rib, and 5th Pork in the CFF division.

Milledgeville Deep Roots 2009

Rescue Smokers crowned GBA State Champion at Deep Roots

Thirty-six professional BBQ teams met in Milledgeville, Georgia on October 26, 2019 at the annual Deep Roots Festival to compete for over $17,000 in prize money and bragging rights as the GBA State Champion.  In addition to the traditional GBS categories of Loin, Pork, and Ribs, the event also hosted ancillaries in poultry, stew, desert, bloody mary, and People’s Choice.

 

Rescue Smokers ended the weekend as Grand Champion and was crowned the GBA State Champion with a trophy and check for $3,500.  Rescue Smokers not only had the highest single score in the finals round, but also finished first in Loin, 19th in Pork, and 14th in Ribs.   Peach Coast BBQ won the Reserve Champion and $2,000 for the highest cumulative preliminary scores in all three categories by finishing 2nd in both loin and pork, and then 5th in ribs.

Rescue Smokers won the Loin category, with Peach Coast BBQ in second, and Smokin’ the Good Stuff in third.

The top teams in pulled pork were Johnson Boys BBQ in first place, followed by Peach Coast BBQ and Lang BBQ Smokers.

Pot’s BBQ claimed the top spot in Ribs.  The BBQ Ninja finished in second and Fire in the Hole was third.  Fire In The Hole has now reached the rib finals in all three events so far this season.

In the ancillary categories, 5 O’clock BBQ  won poultry, Rotary Roasters took the stew category, Pot’s BBQ won desserts, and Sensational Pigs claimed the Bloody Mary title for the second year in row.  5 O’clock BBQ also won the People’s Choice award as the fans’ favorite.

The next GBA sanctioned event is a first time contest at Lake Blackshear on November 16.  Returning contests in Moultrie on December 7, and Americus on December 14, wrap up the 2019 calendar year.  The next GBA judging class will be held in Barnesville on January 25, 2020.  There is still time to sign up for all these events at gbabbq.org
