The GBA Florida State Championship Goes to Bubba Grills

The GBA Florida State Championship Goes to Bubba Grills

Tropical Storm Andrea tried to put a damper on GBA Goin’ Coastal in Fernandina Beach, FL, even spawning a tornado that passed near the contest site on Thursday night. Contest organizer Jay Robertson and the City of Fernandina Beach took it all in stride and put on a great contest. Twenty eight teams vied for the GBA’s Florida State Championship. Another 20+ teams were on hand to compete in the Fun Cook and there were numerous vendors and live musical entertainment throughout the day Saturday.

GBA Elections

harry2To All Georgia Barbecue Association Members

Subject: The election of officers for the 2013-2015 cook season. This IS a two year term.

Nominations will begin June 10, 2013. Any member in good standing can be nominated for the office of President, Vice-President or Secretary. You must first ask the person you nominate if they are willing to accept your nomination.
After they agree then you will contact Pam Nelms at gabbqassoc@gmail.com and make your nomination. Nominations will close at midnight on June 31, 2013.

Voting will begin on July 8, 2013. You will go to the Georgia Barbecue Association web site at www.bbqga.com On the front page click on the link: “GBA Elections” and follow the instructions. Your ballot will REQUIRE that you enter your GBA member #, so have it handy. Use of the membership # is to insure only one vote per member is cast. To maintain confidentiality of the vote, only two people will have access to the ballots. Voting will end on August 5th 2013.

The new officers will be notified around August 12th so they can begin preparations to take office at The Georgia Barbecue Association State Championship, The ComSouth Hambone Jam, in Ft Valley Georgia on September, 6th & 7th, 2013.

There are several things to remember:
If you are a member of a cook team, you can not cook with that team for the duration of your office. If you are a judge, you can not judge for the duration of your office.

The office of President and Vice-President will require fielding many inquires about cooking competitions. It requires you to visit locations for potential new contests and speak to event organizers and/or sponsors.

The President or Vice President will determine if a new location has a site suitable to host a GBA contest. ie: do they have adequate water, electricity etc.

Other duties include organizing schedules so that you don’t schedule too many events in a month or in conflict to other association’s events that may hurt your schedule.

The President will assign Lead Reps and supporting staff in a manner that is in the best interest of the GBA and the event.

It is important that your elected officers are in attendance at all sanctioned GBA events whenever possible.

This is not all of the demands of these offices, but these are some of the more important ones and should be carefully considered when making or accepting a nomination.

If any one has any questions regarding the election process or and duties of the officers, please do not hesitate to give me a call @ 478-731-0145.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ Makes It Two In A Row at Brenau!

Smokin’ 42 BBQ Makes It Two In A Row at Brenau!

Submitted by Greg Hoyt

The hottest team in the GBA is Smokin’ 42 BBQ.   Chad Brooks and Chris O’Neal traveled  north of  Atlanta for the second time in 2 weeks and drove home with the Grand Championship of the Brenau Barbecue Championship!  They say the first one is the hardest but once Smokin’ 42 got it under their belt thy went right back to the trough and gobbled up their second  Grand Championship at the next GBA competition at Brenau.

Grand Champion - Smokin' 42 BBQ

Grand Champion – Smokin’ 42 BBQ

The GBA was invited to co-sanction the Brenau Barbecue Championship with Memphis Barbecue Network.  The GBA showed out in Brenau –  30 GBA Teams cooked all three categories. Two Memphis teams snuck over to cook  a category or two on the GBA side.  Six GBA stalwarts  made the trip to Breanau.  Dixie Que, Jethro’s Cooking Crew, Smoke Shack BBQ, AnarQue , Smokin’ 42 BBQ and Smokin’ AJ’s BBQ all made the trek to Gainesville.  They were joined by twenty four other teams that were that have cooked from zero to three GBA sanctioned events in the past.

Two teams, Smokey Butts and Sauced Hog Smoke Shack set the tone early in the day with another GBA first. Both teams scored a perfect 600 in Loin.  We’ve never had 600’s in the same category on the same day before.  Anarque joined them on the finals table.  Smokey Butts won the Loin category followed by Anarque and Sauced Hog Smoke Shack finishing third.  Dixie Q missed their best shot at a GBA final being four tenths of a point behind and finishing fourth in GBA Loin.

First Place Loin – Smokey Butts

Pulled pork was the opportunity for new teams to show what they could do.  Two of the top four money spots belonged to teams that had not cooked in a GBA Sanctioned event before.   Sauced Hog Smoke Shack edged out Ninja Pigs for first place in Pulled Pork.  Smoke Shack BBQ came in third in pulled pork and Rick’s Smok’n Pig  finished fourth.  In the preliminaries Smoke Shack and Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack had tied in the preliminaries with nearly perfect scores of 599.4.  In the preliminary round. In the finals Ninja Pig passed Smoke Shack for second place.
