92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers Takes Grand at Bikes, Blues & BBQ

Douglas, GA has a storied history in the world of competition BBQ.  The city has joined forces with the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) the past two years to bring professional competition BBQ back to the city. The City of Douglas pulled out all stops to put on a great show for the 2nd annual Bikes, Blues & BBQ Festival.

Brad Sweet of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers got the final call of the day as Grand Champion. It was not easy however as his Loin Finals entry scored just one tenth of a point more than David Hair & Dobey Q’s Pulled Pork Finals entiry.

Howard Harris and Jeff Schramm, aka H & J Cooking Team, made finals in both Pulled Pork and Ribs in addition to a 10th place finish Loin.  This consistency over the preliminary rounds captured the Reserve Grand Champion.

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers Grand Championship Loin entry topped the category. Douglas native daughter, Crystal Smitherman and Hard Rock Hill BBQ took 2nd place with CA Jenn Smokin Que taking 3rd place. It was the first time making GBA finals for both these teams.  J Dubs Stew & Que grabbed 4th place and LawDawg BBQ grabbed 5th place.  In a tie for 5th place, Dobey Q won the tiebreaker over Wilbur’s Been Smokin’ Somthin’. Eighth place went to Dixie Que, 9th place went to Kelvin’s BBQ and H & J Cooking Team rounded out the top ten.

Dobey Q took top honors in Puled Pork with Just Blowing Smoke as the runner up and H & J Cooking Team in 3rd place. Mojo Smokehouse got the call fr 4th place. LawDawg BBQ won the tiebreaker for 5th place over Kelvin’s BBQ. Seventh place went to Gas Passers.  A pair of local teams were up next with Bethel Smokers placing 8th and East Coast Asphalt placing ninth.  92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took 10th place.

In Ribs, it was H & J Cooking Team for the win.  Just Blowing Smoke edged out Mojo Smokehouse for second place on the first tiebreaker.  92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers got the 4th place call. Gas Passers took 5th place and Dixie Que took sixth.  Raging Smoke BBQ walked for 7th place. Hard Rock Hill BBQ got  second call for the 8th place Rib entry. Old Henry’s BBQ captured 9th place and Stump’s Smokers captuted 10th place.

Next up for the GBA is Smokin’ Pork N Butts in Jackson.   The month of May brings three great contests.   The Three Rivers Festibal at Towns Bluff Park will be in Hazlehurst on May 1-2. The following week will be Smoke on the Lake in Acworth.  The GBA  will sanction the 1st Annual White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge in Fort Gaines on May 22-23.

Stump Smokers Hits Trifecta at Hawkinsville Smokin’ the Track

The Hawkinsville Harness Racing Festival hosted the Georgia Barbecue Association and Smokin’ the Track BBQ competition.  When the dust settled from a day of harness racing on the track; Stump Smokers, Tab & Walter “Stump” McDowell,  hit the Trifecta by winning all three categories.  This left no doubt that the team would also win the Grand Championship.  This was only the third time in GBA history that one team made a clean sweep of all the top awards.

David Hair & Dobey Q made finals in both Pulled Pork & Ribs to go with a 5th place finish in Loin to capture the Reserve Grand Championship.

The runner-up to Stump Smokers in Loin was Buster Davis of Smokin’ AJs.  92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers helped maintain their lead in the season’s Team of the Year standings by placing third. LawDawg, currently in second place in the TOTY standings, kept pace by coming in 4th place.  Dobey Q claimed 5th place with 29 Barbecue claiming sixth. Southern Hogs finished in 7th place.  Fiddlers BBQ finished 8th. CaJenn BBQ, cooking in their first GBA contest grabbed 9th place with J Dubs Stew & Que taking 10th

Stumps Smokers and Dobey Q finished first and second in both the Pulled Pork and Ribs categories.  In Pulled Pork, Smokin AJs was again right there in the hunt by finishing third. Just Blowing Smoke came in 4th with LawDawg BBQ coming in fifth. Southern Hogs edge 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers for 6th place by just a tenth of a point. Forget Me Not BBQ took 8th place, HIgh Tech Smokers/Comsouth took 9th with Dixie Davis Cooks rounding out the top ten.

Following Stump Smokers and Dobey Q in Ribs was 29 Barbecue in third place. in 4th place it was Southern Hogs once again edging  92 Barbecue/Assassin Smokers but by a half a point this time. In a tie for 6th place, Real South BBQ won the coin toss over Smokin AJs.  LawDawg BBQ got their third call of the day for 8th place. CaJenn BBQ got to walk a second time in their first GBA contest in 9th place. Forget Me Not BBQ also got to walk twice by taking 10th place in Ribs.

The GBA thanks the Hawkinsvile-Pulaski Co Chamber of Commerce for a great contest and an entertaining day at the Harness Racing Festival.  The GBA head to Douglas for Bikes Blues & BBQ this week and then on to Jackson for Smokin Pork N Butts the following week.

The offices of President and Vice President of the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) are up for election this year.

  • The Candidate Qualifying Period shall be from April 1 to April 15 of the year prior to the end of the current officers’ terms.
  • Any member in good standing who has been a member of the GBA for at least one year prior to the Candidate Qualifying Period may qualify to run for office by declaring their intent to run to the Chairman of the Board of Directors in writing by email or regular mail.
  • On or after April 16, the Chairman of the Board of Directors will announce the candidates for office to the membership via email and posting on the GBA’s website.
  • The voting period will be from June 1 to June 10.

If qualifying by email, the email should be addressed to the Chairman of the GBA Board of Directors Rick Godfrey and Cc: to the Vice Chariman of the GBA Board of Directors Greg Hoyt.  Emails must be timestamped no later than midnight April 15. 2015

If qualifying by regular mail, the letter should be address to the Rick Godfrey Chairman and mailed to the GBA address at PO Box 2085; Perry, GA 31069.  Letter must be postmarked no later than April 15, 2015

The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) plowed into the Durhamtown Off Road Park near Union Point for the Durhamtown Spring Jam & BBQ Cook-off.  While the slick red clay mud was a delight for the 4 Wheelers & Dirt Bikers, it presented some challenges to the Pitmasters.  The GBA cooks were up for the conditions & turned in some outstanding ‘Que  The competition was close as 16 teams vied for the final calls.  The competition was so tight that the GBA reps had to go to break a tie for the Grand Championship.

In the Finals, 29 Barbeque’s Pulled Pork box & Dobey Q’s Loin box both tallied a score of 597 from the final’s judges.  The GBA motto is “It’s All About the Taste” and the Taste criteria is the first level in the tiebreaker system.  29 Barbeque’s scored 0.04 higher in the Taste criteria than Dobey Q to win the Grand Championship.

Bubba Grills made finals in both Loin & Ribs and added a 10th place finish in Pulled Pork to tally the top cumulative score in the preliminary rounds and take home the Reserve Champion award.

Dobey Q’s 597 score in Loin topped the category by just 0.2 over Fiddler’s BBQ. Bubba Grills took 3rd place. 29 Barbeque edged LawDawg BBQ by 0.04 of a point for 4th place. Sixth place went to Main Street BBQ and 7th place went to Real South BBQ.   Southern Hogs, H & J Cooking Team & 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers rounded out the top 10.

 

 

29 Barbeque had the best Pulled Pork of the day with Main Street BBQ taking 2nd place & We Want Que taking 3rd place.  Smoke Shack BBQ grabbe 4th place; 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers grabbed 4th and H & J Cooking Team pulled down 6th place.  Real South BBQ once again captured 7th place with Master Basters capturing 8th place. Ninth place went to Dobey Q and 10th place went to Bubba Grills.

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers got the last call in the Ribs category.  Smokin’ the Good Stuff was runner-up with Bubba Grills taking 3rd place. Smoke Shack BBQ got their second 4th place call of the day and Fiddlers BBQ got the call for 5th place. Dobey Q got their third call of the day for 6th place and H & J Coooking team also got a third call with a 7th place finish. In 8th place was Southern Hogs just 0.3 ahead of 29 Barbeque in 9th place. Tenth place went to We Want Que.

 

 

Durhamtown also hosted a GBA sanctioned Cooking for Fun division contest.  Cooking for Fun consists of Pulled Pork and Ribs.  It is one round of competition only with no finals round as in the GBA Pro division. Six teams competed in the Cooking For Fun Division.

 

Southern Accents took first place in Pulled Pork.  White Racing Team topped the Ribs category. Fine Azz Swine was the runner-up in both cateories and Screaming Eagle BBQ took 3rd place in both as well,

The GBA has three great contests on tap for April starting with Hawkinsville’s Smokin’ the Track followed by Bikes, Blues & BBQ in Douglas and Smokin’ Pork N Butts in Jackson.

Barry Spayberry and 29 Barbeque took first place honors in both Pulled Pork and Ribs, but it was the Rib entry that edged out Pulled Pork box for highest score in the Finals rounds to win the Grand Championship at the Hitachi Walton Co BBQ Festival.  Twenty five teams turned out for the first year event with many of the teams competing in the GBA for the first time.

Just Blowing Smoke was the runner up in both Loin and Pulled Pork as well as 7th in Ribs to claim the Reserve Championship for the second contest in a row.

Kerry Sparks and Lawdawg BBQ recorded a perfect 600 score in the Loin preliminary round to lead the way into the finals rounds. They followed that up with the top entry in the finals round to take first place.  Just Blowing Smoke was second. Third place went to Forget Me Not BBQ with 29 Barbeque taking 4th place. Smoking Armadillo was 5th, 4 K’s BBQ was 6th and Simply Q was 7th place. Eighth through 10th places went to DCR BBQ, Smokin’ Suwanee Sweetmeats and Porch Light respectively.

29 Barbeque led the way in Pulled Pork with Just Blowing Smoke once again in 2nd place. Porkinator took home 3rd place.  Hootie Q came in 4th place. Smokin’ Suwanee Sweetmeats was 0.3 of a point better than Hitachi for 5th place. Southern Hog won the tiebreaker for 7th place over Simply Q.  Lawdawg BBQ claimed 9th place with Georgia Smoke BBQ claiming 10th.

In Ribs, it was 29 Barbeque once again at the top.  Porkinator edged out Smokin’ Armadillo for second place by just 0.2 of a point. Smokin’ Suwanee Sweetmeats completed their strong showing with a 4th place finish in the category. 4 K’s BBQ took 5th with DCR BBQ taking 6th place.  Just Blowing Smoke came in 7th.  Old Henry’s BBQ took 8th place by winning the tiebreaker over Porch Light. Next up for the GBA is the Durhamtown Spring Fling & BBQ Contest on March 20-21.  Three great contests are on tap for April in the GBA:  Hawkinsville’s Smokin’ the Track on April 3-4; Bikes Blues & BBQ in Douglas on April 10-11 and Smokin’ Pork N Butts in Jackson on April 17-18.
