A Grand Time in Fort Gaines for Dobey Q

The Fort Gaines 200 committee pulled out all stops for an amazing contest in the 1st Annual White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge. It all started with a beautiful venue on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The Challenge stepped up a notch when White Oak Pastures presented the People’s Choice competitors with their pasture raised chickens for the contest. Smoke over Bluffton won both the People’s Choice and the BBQ Queen’s choice with their pulled chicken

In the GBA competition, David Hair & Dobey Q’s pulled pork finals entry edges out the rib box of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers by 0.6 of a point for the Grand Championship. That was a testament of how competitive the contest as for the first time in anyone’s memory, 9 different teams made the finals round in the three GBA categories.

Just Blowing Smoke – Robin & Amy Bowles and Rick Goldstien – made finals in Ribs while also taking 4th place in Loin and 5th place in Pulled Pork to take home the Reserve Champiionship.

First Place Loin – CaJenn Smokin Que

CaJenn Smokin Que continued their recent hot streak by winning the Loin category. I Go Low & Slow, cooking in their first GBA event, took 2nd place while Real South BBQ took 3rd place. Fourth place went to Just Blowing Smoke with 5th place going to Fiddler’s BBQ. Rib Ticklers captured 6th place followed by Dobey Q in 7th and LawDawgs BBQ in 8th place. Ninth went to 29 BBQ and 10th went to 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers.

Dobey Q led field in Pulled Pork with Fiddlers BBQ as runner-up and H & J Cooking Team coming in 3rd place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers won the 4th tiebreaker over Just Blowing Smoke for 4th place. The sixth place call with to McDaniels Pit Stop BBQ with the 7th place call going to Real South BBQ. Rib Ticklers took 8th place with 29 BBQ taking 9th and Old Henry’s BBQ rounding out the top ten.

First Place Ribs – 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers

The best Ribs of the day went to 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers. Just Blowing Smoke took second. McDaniels Pit Stop BBQ made the Rib finals in their first professional contest and came in 3rd place. Old Henry’s BBQ walked in 4th place and Fiddler’s BBQ grabbed fifth. Rib Ticklers took 6th place, Chattahoochee Smoke took 7th place and Real South BBQ took 8th place. 29 BBQ and Dobey Q finished 9th and 10th respectively.

The GBA is looking forward to a return trip to Fort Gaines in 2016. The GBA will take a few weeks off the conclude the 2014-2015 contest season with the Brookhaven BBQ Bash on Fourth of July weekend.

Fiddler’s BBQ Breaks Thru at Smoke on the Lake

A few weeks ago at Jackson, Fiddler’s BBQ made finals in all three categories and took first in Loin & Pulled Pork. However, Bubba Grills’ Rib entry denied Harvey & Shirley Wills the last call. At Smoke on the Lake at Acworth, Fiddler’s only made finals in Pulled Pork, but the entry was stong enough to bring home a score of 599 and the Grand Championship.

Grand Champion – Fiddler’s BBQ

Brad Sweet of 92/Assassin Smokers scored a perfect 600 in both Loin and Ribs in the preliminary rounds to record the highest cumulative score for the contest and capture the Reserve Championship. It was the first time a single team has received perfect scores in two different categories in the same contest. Bubba Grills did hit the 600 mark in both the preliminaries and finals in Ribs at Gordon in 2012.

Reserve Champion – 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers

In Pork Loin, Just Blowing Smoke won the final’s table with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers taking 2nd place and Smokin The Good Stuff taking third. Fourth place went to Fiddler’s BBQ;; 5th place went to We Want Que and 6th place went to Plum Superior BBQ. CJ’s BBQ took 7th place with Smart Ash BBQ taking eighth. Curley Que BBQ made 9th place and SmokeShack BBQ rounded out the top 10.

1st Place Loin – Just Blowing Smoke

Fiddler’s BBQ Grand Championship Pulled Pork entry topped the category with Swineholio as the runner-up and CJ’s BBQ in third place. Plum Superior BBQ finished in 4th just ahead of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers in 5th place. Just Blowing Smoke walked for 6th place and Smoking the Good Stuff got the 7th place call. Eighth thru 10th places went to We Want Que, SmokeShack BBQ and Four Fathers BBQ Crew respectively.

Winning Ribs was 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers. Plum Superior BBQ claimed 2nd place and Smoking Butts BBQ claimed third. Smokin the Good Stuff took 4th place. Fifth place went to Rub Shakers Que and 6th place in Ribs went to Swineholio. We Want Que waked for the third time with the 7th place call and Porkinator got their first call of the day for 8th place. Just Blowing Smoke took 9th place and 10th place went to Fiddler’s BBQ.

Smoke on the Lake also hosted a GBA sanctioned Cooking for Fun contest. Hickory Flat BBQ won the Grand Championship and Nice Rack BBQ won the Reserve Championship.

Hickory Flat BBQ won the Chicken category with East Coast BBQ taking 2nd place and YMCA Spirit, Mind & Body BBQ taking 3rd place. Nice Rack BBQ took top honors in Pulled Pork. Liberty BBQ was the runner up and Its Hog Gone Good got the 3rd place call. Hickory Flat BBQ picked up their second 1st place trophy for Ribs, Dawgs Smokin Hawgs came in 2nd with Nice Rack BBQ coming in 3rd place.

The GBA thanks the North Cobb Rotary Club for organizing Smoke on the Lake and the citizens of Acworth for their amazing support of the event. Each year the Rotary club raises thousands for thier charity projects. Next up for the GBA is White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge in Fort Gaines on May 22-23.

Smokin 42 BBQ Rules at Three Rivers Festival

After battling the elements over the past few contests, the teams of the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) found picture perfect weather for the Three Rivers Festival at Towns Bluff Park. The teams responded by turning in outstanding BBQ. A common theme among the judges was how tough it was to pick a favorite among so many great entries. In the end, it was the Finals round Pulled Pork entry turned in by Smokin’ 42 BBQ of Tifton that got the last call of the day as Grand Champion.

CaJenn Smokin’ Que of Hoboken had the highest cumulative score across all three categories in the preliminary rounds to take the Reserve Champion award.

1st Loin – Bethel Smokers

Bethel Smokers of Douglas captured the first place award in Pork Loin. CaJenn Smokin’ Que edge out Just Blowing Smoke of Canton for second place by 0.3 of a point. LawDawg BBQ from Brunswick took third place. Just Smoke N Around of Jackson took 5th place by 1/10th of a point over Smokin’ 42 BBQ, Seventh place went to Lizzy Lou of Middleburg, FL. Swainsboro’s Real South BBQ came in 8th place in Pork Loin with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers of Griffin in 9th place and H & J Cooking Team of Vienna in 10th place

First place in Pulled Pork went to Smokin’ 42 BBQ with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers as the runner-up. Dobey Q of Buena Vista captured 3rd place. Just Smoke N Around captured 4th place and Real South BBQ captured 5th place. Just 7/10th of a point separated 6th place from 9th place. in 6th place, it was LawDawg BBQ just ahead of Bubba Grills of Haddock in 7th place with Buffalo Chip BBQ of Hazlehurst taking 8th place and Mojo Smokehouse of Willcoochee taking 9th place. CaJenn Smokin’ Que rounded out the top 10 in Pulled Pork.

1st Ribs – Bubba Grills

Bubba Grills topped the Ribs category. Dobey Q took 2nd with Just Blowing Smoke taking 3rd place. CaJenn Smokin’ Que walked for the 4th place award with Buffalo Chip BBQ in 5th place. Real South BBQ grabbed 6th place and Smokin’ J’s of Dallas, GA grabbe 7th place. The 8th place call went out to Bethel Smokers. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers finished in 9th place in Ribs with Smokin’ 42 BBQ taking 10th place.

The GBA wants to thank the staff at Towns Bluff Park for hosting the contest at one of the best venue’s on our circuit. Thanks also to the Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis Co. Board of Tourism for organizing the contest. The GBA heads north to Acworth for Smoke on the Lake on May 8-9 then to Lake Walter F George in Fort Gaines for the White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge on May 22-23. GBA Election Update

2015 is an election year for the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA). The offices of President and Vice President are up for vote. The election will be for 2 year term beginning September 2015. The candidate qualifying period for these offices closed on April 15, 2015. The following have qualified to seek office in the upcoming election:

President – Danny Meadows (Incumbent); Scotty Lawson

Vice President – Jim Sewell (Incumbnent)

Voting will be conducted online via the GBA website — www.bbqga.com. The voting period will be from June 1 to June 10, 2015. Only current, active members may vote. A link to the voting page will be posted on the website when voting opens.

Bubba Grills Takes Grand at Smokin’ Pork N Butts

There are a couple of things you can count on at Smokin’ Pork N Butts in Jackson. Great BBQ and Rain. Mud boots were almost as essential as grills, charcoal & wood as steady rain pelted the event for most of the weekend. In spite of the challenging conditions, the teams still made the judges work hard to determine who had the best BBQ of the day.

Fiddlers BBQ made finals in all three categories. Southern Hogs finaled in Loin & Pulled Pork. However, it was Bubba Grills Rib entry that recorded the top score in the final rounds to claim the Grand Championship.

Harvery & Shirley Wills of Fiddlers BBQ, with an assist from Master Judge candidate Greg Sebastian, “Triple Finaled” and accumulated the most points in the preliminary rounds to win the Reserve Champion award.

Pork Loin is always a difficult category, but the scorers had to go to the tiebreaker to determine the winner in the category. Both Fiddler’s BBQ and LawDawg BBQ scored 594.4 in the final round of Loin judging. The GBA declares “Its All About the Taste” and the Taste scores are the first level in the tiebreaker. Fiddler’s BBQ had the highest taste score & edged LawDawg for first place. LawDawg BBQ had a perfect 600 score in the preliminary Loin round. Southern Hogs grabbed third place. Que the Musick took 4th place with Just Blowing Smoke taking fifth. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took 6th place by winning the tiebreaker over Smokin J’s BBQ. Eighth place went to Bubba Grills; 9th place went to Smoke Shack BBQ and 10th went to Main Street BBQ.

Southern Hogs

In Pulled Pork, it was Fiddlers BBQ once again taking top honors. Southern Hogs finished as runner-up with Que the Musick in third place. Main Street BBQ got the 4th place call and Fletcher’s Finest got 5th place. Smokin the Good Stuff edged Real South BBQ for 6th place on the tiebreaker. Just Blowing Smoke also edged LawDawg BBQ in the tiebreaker for 8th place. Bubba Grills rounded out the top 10.

The Grand Championship winning Rib entry earned first place for Bubba Grills. Fiddlers BBQ completed their strong cook with the 2nd place award. Smokin the Good Stuff took 3rd place, but also had a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round. BCD (Boys Cooking Dangerously) came in 4th place. Hootie Q edged 29 BBQ by 0.1 of a point to take 5th place. Just Blowing Smoke captured 7th place and Smoke Shack BBQ captured 8th place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers & Rub Shakers Que finished 9th & 10th respectively.

Once again Connie & Wayne Rosser of the Butt County Exchange Club did an outstanding job managing the contest in trying conditions. The GBA heads to the Three Rivers Festival and Towns Bluff Park on the Altamaha River in Hazlehurst on May 1-2. The following week it will be Smoke on the Water on beautiful Lake Acworth. The month of May completes the water based trifecta with the 1st Annual White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge on Lake Walter F George in Fort Gaines on May 22-23.
