The Smoke on the Water BBQ Contest in Thomaston has a long history as one of the top BBQ contests in the state. This year the contest was sanctioned by the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) for the first time.  Taking the traditional plunge into the lake as Grand Champions was Holy Smokes.  Gary & Dionn Lanton’s team finished a dominant season on the GBA circuit with the win.

Rescue Smokers, Pitmaster Robby Royal, also put the finishing touches on a soild season by taking the Reserve Grand Championship.

1st Place Loin - Hootie Q

In the Pork Loin preliminary round Just Blowing Smoke and Hootie Q both recorded perfect 600 scores. They were joined in the Finals round by 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers.  Hootie Q had the top score in Finals to win the category. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers came in 2nd with Just Blowing Smoke finishing in 3rd place

In Pulled Pork all three finalists had perfect 600 scores in the preliminaries.  After the final round, Holy Smokes took 1st place, Daddy O’s BBQ took 2nd and Flint River Cookers placed third.

The Ribs category was extremely close as 3 teams tied for the 3rd and final spot in the Finals round.  After the tiebreakers were run, Raging Smoke BBQ edged out Rescue Smokers & The Fat Boys of Tenneson Nissan for the spot in the Finals.  Raging Smoke won the Finals round and captured 1st place, 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers had a perfect 600 score in preliminaries but finished 2nd.  Just Smoke N Around captured 3rd place.

In the Brisket ancillary, Rescue Smokers lead the way. Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team was runner up with Wright on Q in 3rd place.

There must be something about the tall pines and the river waters at the 3 Rivers BBQ Festival that suits Bryan Mroczka and Bull Rush BBQ. The Casselberry, FL team won the Grand Championship for the second year in a row.  Gary & Dionn Lanton of Holy Smokes increased their lead in the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) Team of the Year points race by making finals in both Loin & Pulled Pork along with a 4th place in Ribs to take the Reserve Grand Championship.

Holy Smokes lead the way in Loin. Rescue Smokers was second and Bubba Grills was third. Fouth place went to Southern Hogs with fifth place going to Weekend Warriors.  Bull Rush BBQ’s Grand Championship Pulled Pork lead the way in the category followed by Holy Smokes in second. Off the Chain BBQ took 3rd place; Budmeisters took 4th place and Daddy O’s BBQ took 5th place. In Ribs it was Rescue Smokers, Robby Royal pitmaster, for the win.  Southern Hogs was the runner up. Weekend Warriors grabbed 3rd place. In 4th place was Holy Smokes and in 5th was Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team.

Stephanie & Michael Chumbley of We Want Que have been steadily climbing the standings in the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) over the year or so.  At BBQ & Brew, Canton; they captured their first Grand Championship. Their Final Round Loin entry outscored the Pulled Pork entry from Bubba Grills and the Ribs entry from Hold Your Horses BBQ.

Myron Mixon and Jack’s Old South made finals in both Loin & Pulled Pork and added a 7th place finish in Ribs to take the Reserve Grand Championship trophy.

 

 

Following We Want Que in the Loin category was Jacks’s Old South in second place. Rub Shakers Que placed third. Southern Hogs finished 4th with Hootie Q in 5th place.   Bubba Grills, Lonnie Smith, took top honors in Pulled Pork.  Diamond D Cooking Team was runner-up and Jack’s Old South took 3rd place.

Fourth place went to Lang BBQ Smokers and 5th place went to Hold Your Horses BBQ.

 

Cary Chasteen, pitmaster for Hold Your Horses BBQ, got his first category win in the GBA with Ribs. Lang BBQ Smokers came in 2nd place.  Southern Hogs, Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team & We Want Que finished 3rd thru 5th respectively.

Cartersville – The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) officials had to go to the tiebreaker system to determine the Grand Champion at the Cartersville BBQ & Brews festival.  Southern Hogs Loin entry and Holy Smokes Ribs entry both totaled a 597.5 final round score.  On the first level tiebreaker, Taste, Holy Smokes received four 10’s compared to three received by Southern Hogs gave the edge to Gary & Dionn Lanton of Holy Smokes.

Following Southern Hogs winning Loin entry was Pop N Chubby BBQ in 2nd place & Rub Shakers Que in 3rd place.  Swine Dining GA, Pitmaster Anthony Mullins, won the Pulled Pork category. Holy Smokes claimed 2nd with We Want Que taking third.  Holy Smokes first place Ribs topped the runner-up Lang BBQ Smokers.  Third place went to  Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team.

In the Cooking for Fun Division, Napalm Sticks to Pigs won both the Pulled Pork & Ribs categories.  O Holy Knight BBQ took 2nd in Ribs & 3rd in Pulled Pork.   VPQ was runner-up in Pulled Pork.  If You Smoke It, They Will Come placed 3rd in Ribs.  Swine Dining GA won the Brisket ancillary contest with a perfect 600 score.

 

The GBA congratulates the BBQ & Brews crew for putting on an outstanding first contest in Cartersville.

Ashburn, GA — The Fire Ant Festival in Ashburn comes up with a new & unique theme each year. For 2017, it was a Star Trek theme. The Grand Champion recevied $2500 and a unique “Starship Anterprise” trophy complete with lights, phasers & photo torpedoes.  Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team, Jack & Sandi Fallin,  captured their first Grand they “beamed up” the best entry of the finals rounds in Ribs.

Matt & Donna Sapp of Southern Hogs just missed making finals twice. Once on a tiebreaker. However, the 4th place finishes in Loin and Ribs lead to the best overall score and the Reserve Grand Champion.

The field of 35 on the top teams from Georgia and north Florida delivered awesome”Que” to the judges tables.   There were two perfect 600 scores recorded in the preliminary rounds.  Hootie Q, Sandy Autry, hit the perfect mark in Loin while Brad Sweet of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers did it in Ribs.  Off the Chain BBQ made finals in both Loin & Pulled Pork.

Rescue Smokers, Pitmaster Robby Royal,  topped the Loin category.  Hootie Q came in 2nd place and Off the Chain took 3rd place.  In Pulled Pork, it was Chuck & Carrie East of Off the Chain BBQ for the win.  Weekend Warriors BBQ was the runner-up and Bite My Butt BBQ finished third.   Following Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team in Ribs was 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers in 2nd and Carter Q in 3rd place.

Once again the Ashburn Chamber of Commerce delivered a top notch festival surrounding the BBQ competition.  Thousands of visitors enjoyed the entertainment, carnival, vendors and fireworks show.
